- Pharmaceutical Biotechnology field: An overview
Pharmaceutical biotechnology, one of the specialty of pharmacy program, is an applied and interdisciplinary field in which living organisms are used to produce effective biological products. By employing the knowledge of pharmaceutical biotechnology, many proteins including recombinant vaccines, blood and coagulation factors, interleukins, hormones such as insulin and growth hormone, enzymes, antibodies, etc have been produced and are available in Iran pharmaceutical market for the treatment and control of various diseases. Furthermore, treatment of different diseases by using modern treatment systems such as gene and cell therapy has become possible.
- History of Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology
From 2016, with the permission of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology started Ph.D. program in the field of pharmaceutical biotechnology. Up to now, about 33 students have entered the Ph.D. course, of which 21 students have been graduated. The department was officially formed in 2019 as the seventh department of the School of Pharmacy. Currently, five faculty members are enrolled in teaching Pharm.D. and Ph.D. courses, supervising the Pharm.D. and Ph.D. thesis, along with implementing research projects.
- Ph.D. course of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology
The Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology is a course program that empower the knowledge of the admitted students in various fields of pharmaceutical biotechnology. The purpose of the Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology is to train human and expert personnel to meet the educational and research needs of pharmacy schools and research centers, as well as to train specialized and experienced human resources for the pharmaceutical industries to produce and control the quality of biological products. Through the courses and thesis based study, our Ph.D. graduates may have a lot of career options. They are able to work in biopharmaceutical industry to produce or control recombinant drugs, they also can do research to develop new medicines. Furthermore, they can teach at a college level or may make new policies for biopharmaceutical sciences.
- The mission of the educational and research program in the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology:
- Providing academic training and conducting researches in the interdisciplinary areas of biotechnology for universities and research centers of the country towards development of products and technologies
- Training expert personnel for biopharmaceutical industry in the fields of:
- Quality control of biological products
- Quality assurance of biological products
- Good manufacturing process (GMP) of biological products
- Downstream processes (separation and purification of biological drugs)
- Upstream processes (cell line development)
- Cell culture and engineering
- Formulation of biological products
- Preparation of a comprehensive file for biological products in the CTD format
